How was the Day of the Navy born in Mexico?
The Day of the Navy is celebrated on June 1 because on a day like this but in the year 1917, the steam merchant ship Tabasco set sail for the first time from the port of Veracruz, whose crew was composed solely of Mexicans by birth.
This fact was done in compliance with article 32 of the Constitution of Mexico promulgated on February 5 of that same year. Before the said article came into force, the capitals, chiefs of engineers and officers of the ships were all foreigners.
The first time that Navy Day was celebrated was on June 1, 1942 . This date also served to pay tribute to the crews of the tankers "Potrero del Llano" and "Faja de Oro" that were sunk by German submarines on May 13 and 20 of that same year during World War II.
In addition, that same day a decree was published declaring Mexico belligerent against the countries of the Berlin-Rome-Tokyo axis. Between June and July of that year, other tankers were attacked and sunk, including "Tuxpan", "Las Chaopas", "Amatlán" and "Oaxaca".
